The table of contents at the left can be used to quickly find the answer to a specific question.
Language loss can be caused by anything that injures the brain. For example, the brain can be damaged by impact from a car accident or a fall. Strokes and aneuryms cause sudden disruptions in blood flow; consequently, brain cells to die due to lack of oxygen. When a person suddenly loses language skills, the resulting language disorder is called aphasia. Often other thinking skills are intact, allowing a person with aphasia to drive a car and live independently. The brain can also be damaged gradually by various toxins, heart disease and neurological disease. These conditions dont produce catastrophic language loss, so the person is not referred to as aphasic. They might have more subtle cognitive problems, such as word-finding difficulties, slowed processing, memory impairment and sequencing difficulties. The term dementia is used when there is wide-spread cognitive impairment as a result of aging, disease or trauma.
Return to topTwo ways you can improve your chances of keeping your language abilities into old age are diet and brain exercises. Just as physical exercise can reverse the clock and give you a younger-looking body, brain exercises can give you a younger-functioning brain. Scientists tell us that learning a new skill is a powerful way to keep your brain young.
Return to topIn some cases there is spontaneous recovery of language skills as the brain heals and swelling is reduced. After the initial recovery, language skills will continue to improve if the person has opportunities to practice intensively. The brain will form new connections and build new pathways if stimulation is provided.
