What is Fast ForWord®?

A: Fast ForWord is brain training software that helps people overcome learning difficulties. Most tutoring programs only work around the underlying weaknesses. Fast ForWord gets to the source of the problem. It helps people overcome deficits in memory, attention, processing speed and sequencing.

Fast ForWord is a computerized intervention that uses the principles of neuroplasticity to make fast, permanent changes to the brain – which will make reading and learning (in all subjects) much easier. Fast ForWord helps students pay attention longer, process information faster, and comprehend what they’re reading. Many parents and teachers see results in learners in as little as eight weeks.

Brain Training with Fast ForWord

Fast ForWord targets learning difficulties at their core, starting in the brain.

The four initial programs improve foundational cognitive skills like phonological awareness, processing, attention, automaticity, memory and sequencing. Click on the following links to see more details and download free handouts. These are available for anyone who is interested in Fast ForWord.

Fast ForWord was designed by a team of Researchers in Neuroscience and Linguistics

Dr. Mike Merzenich

Dr Mike Merzenich NeuroscientistDr. Merzenich is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences for his work on brain plasticity. He is a graduate of the University of Portland and obtained his doctoral degree from Johns Hopkins. Dr. Merzenich has been awarded more than 50 patents and has contributed his software development skills to several therapeutic training programs. Among his awards are the international IPSEN and Zülch Prizes.

Dr. Paula Tallal

Dr. Tallal is a cognitive neuroscientist and board-certified clinical psychologist who has authored over 200 professional publications and holds several patents.

Dr. William Jenkins

Dr. Jenkins is an expert in learning-based brain plasticity, behavioral algorithms, and psycho-physical methods, as well as an expert in multimedia and Internet technology. He is an author or co-author of more than 100 publications and holds 40 U.S. patents and 12 foreign patents.

Dr. Steven Miller

Dr. Miller is neuropsychologist with expertise in the assessment and treatment of developmental language and reading impairments.

These researchers founded the Scientific Learning Company and patented their approach. Their special method is not available in any other phonics or reading program. Likewise, it is not available in any other brain training software. What is their secret?

The Secret to Fast ForWord’s Success

reading-assistant-tech-learning-awardThe secret to Fast ForWord’s success is that the auditory signal is slowed down. We can’t do this with our human voice. It can only be done with computer technology. Fast ForWord software is unique in offering this powerful intervention.

How do Most Adults React to Fast ForWord?

Imagine how you would react if you put on glasses that were not made for you. Teachers and parents tend to have rapid auditory processing skills. The slow, stretched out speech in Fast ForWord sounds odd. Most adults don’t like it at first.

How do Struggling Students React to Fast ForWord?

Research has shown that struggling students do not have rapid processing skills. For these students, it is a relief to work with an auditory signal that is slowed down.

Once the user is successful, the rate of the auditory signal is increased slightly. The user gradually works toward a normal auditory signal. Students become confident and successful.

Fast ForWord Software Improves Language and Literacy

After the important prerequisite cognitive skills have been established, additional programs in the software series work on reading fluency, reading comprehension and reading with metacognition.  These programs use a normal auditory signal.
